a ballad

The house lonely and abandoned
A vessel of the past
Memories left to linger there
For nothing ever lasts

Paint pealing off the windowpanes
Glass shattered on the floor
Vines climb along the trellis left
By the old cellar door

Just dust and wind are here to dance
In rooms where they once stood
Through the mail slot letters piled
On the floor’s weathered wood

The moon illuminates the yard
The weeds are over grown
No life or light shines from inside
It’s hauntingly alone
